George W. Bush got into trouble, once again, over the name of a world leader. After a rally in Canton, Michigan, a number of weeks ago, a man posing as a Canadian television reporter told Mr. Bush that Canadian Prime Minister Paul Poutine had endorsed him for President. Bush beamed and responded excitedly to the endorsement.
Unfortunately for Bush, Canada's Prime Minister was Paul martin, not Paul Poutine. And just to be clear, Poutine is a popular artery-clogging French Canadian dish made up of french fries and cheese curds, smothered in gravy.
The television reporter was actually Canadian comedian Rick Mercer. Mercer hosts a propram on the CBC network called "This Hour ha 22 Minutes". The show often lampoons American politicians ignorance of Canadian c.ulture and politics. Last season, he had the Governor of Arkansas convinced that Canada was building an igloo to protect its parliament building.
The joke is actually on Mercer, for if you take into account Paul Martin's personality and charm, he could very easily be mistaken for a bag of poutine.
